Mr William Breakey

Pump Priming award recipient 2020/21

Project: “Surgical outcomes improved by tracking eye movements”

Impact statement

This award took my research to the next level, (from doctoral to post doctoral). It gave my work external validation, which gave me the confidence to pursue new collaboration between university academics and NHS clinicians.

We are still in the early stages of this research, currently running validation experiments on the equipment. We have big ambitions to create artificial intelligence led algorithms to provide objective outcome scoring measures in cleft lip. This fellowship has enabled the creation of a new research group in Newcastle that combines cleft surgeons and 3D vision professors from Newcastle University. It has also led to the creation of two MRes medical student projects. We hope that this will in turn lead to successful PhD funding.

We will be attending the Cleft 2022 conference in Edinburgh (a large international meeting held only once every four years), and we will be running an eye tracking experiment at the conference, this has been approved and heavily supported by the conference organising team.
