Remembering John Byrne

We are saddened to share the news of the death of John Byrne, who passed away peacefully on 21 April 2025 at the age of 79. John was a valued vice-chairman of the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation and a longstanding supporter of our work, bringing with him a quiet determination, sharp intellect, and a personal connection to the mission of advancing burns care and reconstructive surgery.

John’s relationship with the Foundation was rooted in his own experience of burns as a young child, when he received pioneering reconstructive treatment at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. This early experience shaped his lifelong interest in supporting advances in burns care, and in 1985, together with his brother Edmund, he began a series of biennial 25-mile fundraising walks to raise money for the Foundation’s research programmes. Over the years, these efforts raised over £200,000, providing vital funding for research into improving outcomes for burns patients.

In 2005, John became vice-chairman of the Foundation, a role he approached with characteristic dedication and thoughtful insight. He brought a keen understanding of the challenges faced by burns survivors and their families, always ensuring that discussions at board meetings remained grounded in the human impact of our work. His contributions were marked by a clear sense of purpose, a commitment to careful stewardship of the Foundation’s resources, and a genuine concern for those whose lives are affected by burns.

John was a man of broad interests and considerable knowledge, qualities that he brought to his work with the Foundation. He had a sharp eye for detail and an appreciation for the practical needs of both researchers and patients, helping to shape the direction of funding in a way that balanced scientific progress with compassion for those receiving care. His presence at meetings was always thoughtful, often bringing a fresh perspective or a moment of quiet reflection that helped guide decisions with clarity and care.

Beyond his formal role, John’s personal commitment to improving the lives of burns survivors never wavered. He understood, from his own experiences, the long journey of recovery and the difference that innovation and kindness can make. It was this understanding that made him such a valued part of the Foundation, both as a trustee and as a friend to many who worked alongside him.

John will be remembered with respect and gratitude for his many years of service to the BMRF and the lasting impact of his contributions. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him.

We remain committed to continuing the work that John cared so deeply about, ensuring that the Foundation’s mission to advance burns care and support those affected by burns continues into the future.
